Winter TexMex Recipes

We might not get a cold winter in Houston but we sure are going to eat like it! Despite not needing to warm up and eat something cozy to heat up our days, we still feel like it’s necessary to mark winter with a little comfort food. And in West Houston is there anything more desirable than some good ol’ TexMex? Here at Alta City West we’re combining our local favorite food with a little winter spice and making sure this winter is commemorated with good food, TexMex spice, and feeling like we truly celebrated winter despite being outside in shorts most days.

Giving Thanks In Houston

For the month of November Alta City West and Wood Residential Services are focusing on the topic of giving thanks. With Thanksgiving coming up and having so much time to reflect on everything we are thankful for we think that it’s a great opportunity to share some ways you can volunteer and give back to your community. Houston is full of opportunities to help in anyway that interests you! Between seasonal volunteer opportunities and year long non-profits needing help you’ll easily be able to find something you’re passionate about and spend a little time this week giving thanks. There’s so much going on in Houston for Thanksgiving but we’ve gathered a few to start the search off for you!

Holiday Cards
Holiday Cards
An easy way to give back without having to dedicate a whole lot of time is by writing a Holiday Card to someone who needs a few caring words during the holiday season. You can write one card, or many and drop them off at one of these locations to be delivered.
Pet Adoptions
The holiday season is full of families growing and expanding so with that comes a busy season for pet shelters. Adoption events are always looking for more volunteers to help get those furry friends a new family just in time for the holidays! More info here.
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a Thanksgiving tradition carried out across the US and it’s extremely popular in Houston. Meals on Wheels provides meals to homebound seniors and others who might not have the ability to make their own Thanksgiving meal. Sign up for Meals on Wheels here.
Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on everything that we are thankful for in our lives. It’s also a great time to give back in thanks for everything you are grateful for. Whether you volunteer with one of these three great places, or you find another opportunity, it’s an amazing thing to do this month and you’re going to make someones whole day.

Thanksgiving Essentials For A Perfect Holiday

Thanksgiving is such a great time of year because it kicks off the holiday season and gets everyone together to start celebrating a time of giving. For some, Thanksgiving is easy peasy because they’ve got the basics down to a science and they kick off Thanksgiving without a hitch every year. However, for some they need a few reminders and guidance on how to throw an amazing Turkey Day party. We here at Alta City West want to give you some Thanksgiving essentials to make sure your day is one of the best you’ve ever had. And even better news, Houston is one of the best places to throw a Thanksgiving day party. The weather isn’t too hot but you don’t need to be in jackets either. So just relax, you’ve got the base to an amazing holiday already going. Here are just a few Thanksgiving essentials to put the cherry on top of the sundae.

The Dessert

The one thing we know for sure is the necessity for sugar on Thanksgiving. We understand that having the same pie every year can become tiresome. These recipes are sure to pleasantly surprise everyone while still bringing a fall theme to your Turkey Day dinner. (Recipes and photos from here).

The Decorations

2

It doesn’t take much to give your home a fall feeling when inviting a bunch of guests over. If you’re hosting the big dinner chances are people are going to be more focused on the food rather than the decorations anyways. However, it is still nice to welcome people in with small reminders of the season around us. Get a chalkboard going for people to write their favorite dishes, have small fall crafting tables for the kids, and put out some candles and pumpkins to get everyone in the spirit. (Decorations and photo from here).

The Basics

3

The one thing everyone tends to forget about on Thanksgiving is to just have fun and relax with your closest friends and family. Plan ahead and just take the day as it comes and don’t worry about things going wrong. No matter what, if you spend the day with your nearest and dearest it’s going to be a great holiday. Follow some of these tips to plan ahead to have a less stressful holiday. (Tips and photo from here).

Thanksgiving is approaching quicker than you might think! Use our guide to create the perfect deserts, decorations and scheduling so that you can have the most relaxing and well put together dinner your friends and family have ever seen. Make it fun and festive but most importantly make it a memorable Turkey Day.

You get it all in one place without having to travel all the streets looking for your favorites. (Photo courtesy of @houtxgrown Instagram).

Photo Blog: Best of The Texas State Fair

Well Texas, it’s come and gone yet again. The Texas State Fair marks such a happy point in summer. It’s still warm, yet starting to cool down a little and everyone starts getting in that fall mood. The Texas State Fair is always buzzing with fun and bringing new surprises to Texans far and wide. We at Alta City West thought we would end the summer with a Photo Blog: The Best Of The Texas State Fair just to remind us of the good times before winter comes along and we realize we won’t see the fair again for another year. Grab the tissues Houston, we’ll be sharing our favorite memories of Big Tex.

Only Texans know the importance of serving meat with our alcohol. It’s just something that needs to be done. Kudos to whoever invented this beauty. (Photo from here).

The Livestock

It’s a well-known fact that livestock lives better in Texas and the State Fair shows this off perfectly. Every year we are more and more impressed with the livestock. This pig did such an excellent job, he deserved a nap. (Photo from here).

Sadly the fair is gone for the year but the memories will live on until next year and we’ll be sitting thinking about the foods for the next 6 months. If you didn’t get a chance to make it we hope next year you head over to experience it for yourself! Because we really do do it bigger in Texas.

Photo Blog: Houston’s Most Haunted

It’s official, one of our top 12 favorite months has arrived! October is a time for scaring and ghoulish activities to commence and we cannot be more excited for the countdown to Halloween. We’re going to fill up on candy, watch as many scary movies as possible, and start full out decorating with pumpkins and cobwebs. But before our favorite holiday arrives and we throw on our costumes, Alta City West thinks we need to share the greatness that is the haunted Houston scene. You may not know it but chances are you pass a notoriously haunted area in Houston everyday. With some even located right by in West Houston, there has never been a better time to go out and get a little spooked in Houston. Alta City West wants to make sure you get the best of the best out of your scare experience and with that we give to you Photo Blog: Houston’s Most Haunted. Go forth and be scared Houston.

Jefferson Davis Hospital

It is the trifecta of scary: built on a cemetery, was a hospital, and is now abandoned and boarded up. It’s recently been renovated and turned into artists lofts, but that doesn’t stop the scary antics that ensue at night! (Photo from: Hauntedia.com)

Martha Chapel Cemetery

We’re a little scared to even write about this one, we don’t want this juju in our lives. But still we must go on. Martha Chapel Cemetery has cemented its title as one of Houston’s most haunted places not only for the endless paranormal activities that go on at all hours of the day but on top of that it sits at the end of a road that locals call ‘Demon Road’. No, we’re not kidding. (Photo from: Hauntedia.com)

If you’re sitting at home and wondering “Where can I go in Houston to get really scared this Halloween season?” (We don’t know why you would be doing that, but to each their own) Alta City West is here to provide you with a decent starting point of where you can go get the full ghost experience.

Indoor Houston Fun for The Cooler Months

We must admit, we are pretty excited that the heat is coming to an end and that we are staring the cooler months in the face and walking right towards them! During the summer months, Houston outdoor activities are hustling and bustling around and you can find just about every Houstonian outside having fun. However, once the summer months come to an end and winter is upon us, things start to slow down outside and those of us who live in HTown start looking for indoor activities to fill our time. Alta City West wants to provide you with indoor Houston fun for the cooler months so you have some options to escape the oddness of a cool Houston.

Downtown Aquarium

The Downtown Aquarium, Houston is so much more than just any old aquarium. Here you can learn about anything from the Louisiana Swamp life to the White Tigers of the Maharaja’s Temple. There’s a stingray petting zoo and an adventure through the shark tan to satisfy those who want to live on the edge a little, too.

Space Center Houston

Mission_control_center

If you’re fascinated by outer space and all that we know about it so far, this is the place for you. From meeting an astronaut to a simulator that lets you feel what it’s like to be in space, The Space Center is filled with all sorts of educating exhibits. But don’t let that education fool you, this place is a blast!

Alta City West

1234

One of our favorite options (unbiased, of course) is taking the day to sit and relax at Alta City West. We have a pool table, a clubhouse, a cyber café, a gym, a community kitchen for parties, and a lounge. Plus, you don’t have to drive at all and at the end of your fun you can call it a night and head up to bed.

While it may not necessarily get cold in Houston, per se, its still just not as fun to be outdoors when it’s grey and gloomy. Besides, we spend so much time outdoors in the summer months that winter is the perfect time to get indoors and learn all the things you’ve been meaning to the past few months! Besides, who doesn’t love a good learning day?

The Hype About Texas Football

If you think Hollywood celebrities, musicians, or the Harry Potter series had a strong following, you obviously haven’t been around a Texan during football season. Football season is a notoriously hyped up time for Texans as they travel far and wide, body paint and all, to see their favorite teams bring home the win. We say ‘teams’ because it doesn’t just stop with the Cowboys well-known and vast following. We Texans follow high school football more closely than some teenagers pay attention to their cell phones. Even in Houston there is a strong following of local high schools and Sunday football parties thrown to gather neighbors and friends to cheer on our Cowboys. Alta City West wants to remind you how great it is to be a Texas Football fan and show you just how wild we get here about football.

Cowboys Football

If you’ve never heard of or seen pictures of AT&T Stadium, we’re going to just assume you live under a rock. AT&T Stadium is home of the Dallas Cowboys and is one of the largest football stadiums in the United States. It can hold up to 105,000 people for a football game and has a retractable roof to transform it into an outdoor arena if desired (real life Transformers style).

Allen Eagles

Screen Shot 2015-09-08 at 4.42.26 PM

The Allen Eagles are the type of team that people make movies about. They won the State Championships 3 years in a row from 2012-2014 and have won a district title every year since 2006. Additionally they have a $60 million stadium… For high school football. Only in Texas, friends.

Texas Longhorns

Screen Shot 2015-09-08 at 4.41.06 PM

Any team with a large college student following is bound to be a rowdy bunch. The Longhorns fan section is always loud and proud to cheer on their team! They take the term ‘Dedication’ to a new level.

With Texas Football season starting up again, Alta City West just wants to remind you how great it is to be a football fan in the state most well known for their football antics. Whether you’re cheering on the Cowboys, Longhorns, or Eagles we wish your team endless wins this season! Go Texas!

Wings Over Houston Airshow

This event is perfect for those few who are still clinging on to the absolute last little fragments of summer.
