Photo Blog: Houston Spots for Water Fun

Boy oh boy, is it hot around here! West Houston doesn’t even have the worst of it in the state of Texas, but we at Alta City West sure do want to cool down. Yes, we’ve got a pool… but what about a drive to a lake or over to the ocean? Or even just a waterpark day? There are so many ways to cool off here in Houston, and we’re counting them down in our photo blog this week – some of our favorite spots aren’t too far from here. Don’t worry, relief from the sun is on its way! If you’ve found some ways to beat the heat, too, will you share them with us? We’d love to spotlight them on our social media. Fore! That’s what we love to hear out and about as we enjoy the outdoors, especially now that summer’s begun. Of course, golfing is just one of many options for how to enjoy time outside in Houston this summer… but you’ve also got park days, picnics, hikes, and trips to the beach. Here in this week’s photo blog, we at Alta City West are pinpointing a few of our favorite outdoor activities (yes, golf is included) around Houston. Go on out there and soak up some sun!

Photo Blog: Sunsets Around Houston

There’s something about the sunset, don’t you think? Here on the west side of Houston at Alta City West, we can’t get enough of the breathtaking sky – there’s a reason every country singer from George Strait to Jason Aldean has sang about what it looks like to look up, don’t you think? When the sun hits the Texas skyline just right, you’re left with a beautiful sunset at the end of the day… and that’s what we’re showcasing in this week’s photo blog. We’ve taken some of our favorite images from Instagram that highlight that beautiful sky-light! Got a pic you’ve snapped? Be sure to share with us, too!

Staying Cool in Houston This Summer

“Beat the Heat!” You hear it every year, and you often only realize it when it’s too late: when you’re sunburned, sleepy, and sick of the sun. Before the temperature gets too hot, we at Alta City West want to help you plan ahead! Yes, it’s fun to enjoy the summer, but staying cool should be at the top of your priority list once those temperatures rise.   Below, we’re detailing a few of our favorite ways to stay cool and beat the heat in Houston this summer: there are water activities and indoor spots, family fun and nights out with friends… and all of them will keep you cool without so much as breaking a sweat. Well, ok, maybe just a little sweat…   Option 1: The Pool. Ok, maybe we’re cheating by saying this one – but you can’t beat the pool here at Alta City West. There’s a reason we love to call this place home, and the pool is the at the top of that list. Come on out to barbecue, enjoy the cabana areas, and throw your own pool party! 🙂 Option 2: The Water Park. Been to Typhoon Texas Waterpark yet? Located in Katy, TX (only a short way west of us here in Houston), this water park has got it all! Fun for the whole family with pools, slides, and a whole lot more. Go ahead, and make a day of it. Option 3: The Outdoors. Cooling off is also a lot of fun when you’re outdoors! Whether you like lake swimming or beach days, Houston has got options for you. We recommend a weekend drive out to Galveston, where the beachs are beautiful, and the bay is calling your name! However you choose to stay cool, just be sure to lather up with sunscreen, and stay hydrated. It’s hot out there – but enjoying the heat can be fun, especially afterwards, when cooling off is the refreshment you need!

Photo Blog: Favorite Craft Beers

When it comes to craft beers, there’s no place like Houston! In the mood for a hoppy IPA? Want a crisp Hefeweisen? Looking for a thick, creamy Stout? No matter your flavor, Houston’s got you covered. Here at Alta City West, we’re counting down just a few of our favorite craft beers that you can find around here – with this awesome photo blog! Got your own favorite craft brews? Be sure to share them with us, so we can see and share, too. Cheers!

Celebrating Cinco De Mayo in Houston

Everybody loves May 5th! What better way to make an excuse to celebrate than indulging in a happy hour, a great meal, and some live music (mariachi, of course)? This Cinco De Mayo, we’re counting down the ways you can celebrate – with margaritas, tequila, and Mexican food galore! Here are just a few of our favorite Tex-Mex spots, all within walking distance of us here at Alta City West! Number 1: Chuy’s! Why we love it: the variety of the food and the friendly staff, hands down! Not to mention, it’s right across the street from us! Number 2: El Tiempo Cantina Why we love it: the vibe is fun – every time we walk in, it feels like a party! Number 3: Los Tios Mexican Restaurant Why we love it: what’s not to love about an authentic spot with deep, delicious flavors? Number 4: Fajita Flats Why we love it: the blend of food (not feeling Tex-Mex, and want burgers instead? You’ve got it!) – and we love the drinks, too. #Margaritas Number 5: Mila’s Taqueria Mexico Why we love it: sometimes it’s the smallest, most unexpected placed to get the most bang for your buck. Number 6: Taco Cabana Why we love it: “taco” is in the name – this place knows tacos! Need we say more? Wherever you decide to celebrate, be sure to have fun and take precautions in your partying!

4 Brilliant Tips to Keep Your Home Cool in the Summer

Summer weather is quickly approaching, so that not only means that it’s time to break out the shorts and flip flops, but also that Houston’s temperature will rise to sweltering levels. Thankfully, Alta City West offers state-of-the-art air conditioning units in all of their homes, but there are other ways to keep your apartment cool and utility bills down. This week’s blog sheds light on the different ideas on how to keep your home comfortable before reaching for that thermostat.

Keep Your Blinds Closed

This may seem like common sense, however, 30 percent of unwanted heat comes from your windows, and utilizing shades and curtains can save you up to 7 percent on your bills and lower indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees. Blinds truly save your home from the sun turning your home into an apartment size greenhouse!

Swap Your Bedding

While flannel and fleece sheets can feel wonderful in the cooler months, switching your bedding to cotton will have an amazing cooling effect. Cotton is the best textile at wicking away moisture, thus leaving you to feel cooler throughout your night’s sleep. For an added bonus, buy a buckwheat pillow or two, since buckwheat hulls have a naturally occurring air space between them, they won’t hold onto your body heat like conventional pillows.

Fire Up the Grill

The summer months are a perfect time to use one of our grills, not just because of the delicious food you can make, but also because it keeps your home from heating up! Using your oven or stove top in the summer will make your home very warm, so head down to Alta City West’s pool area to cook dinner!

Put Off Chores

Have a few loads of laundry or dishes to wash? Don’t run the dishwasher, clothes washer/dryer, or other appliances during the heat of the day, since these machines generate heat and humidity that will be hard to overcome. It’s better to complete your housework during the evening, night time, or even early morning when the temperature is way down.

Houston’s summer weather is one of the best things about Texas, however the high temperatures can also become bothersome. These tips will help you to give your home’s air conditioner a break while also keeping your home cool and comfortable.

4 Houston Staycations That Won’t Break the Bank

Summer is quickly approaching and people are beginning to plan amazing vacations for some fun and relaxation. Even though extravagant vacations can be a blast, sometimes it just is not in the budget. This week’s blog is all about our favorite “staycation” spots in the Houston area!:

Lake Houston or Lake Conroe

Instead of heading to the crowded Galveston Beach, why not hop onto the I-45N and head to one of Houston’s beautiful lakes? Both of these lakes have camping facilities and hiking trails in the wilderness, giving you even more fun options on the trip. The serene atmosphere gives the opportunity for some true relaxation rather than just being a tourist jammed into the crowded beaches or sitting lines of traffic trying to navigate around Galveston.

Hotel Icon

If you want to be pampered while staying at a luxe hotel for a night or two, then Houston’s Hotel Icon is your best bet! Smack dab in the middle of Houston’s epicenter, this hotel’s style and atmosphere will allow you to truly enjoy everything that downtown Houston has to offer. Restaurants, shops, and entertainment all right outside your door step will ensure a great time for all parties involved!

Galveston Beach

To some people, vacation and relaxation are synonymous with the beach, but that does not mean you have to travel far! With it’s abundance of sand and sunshine, Galveston Beach gives a tropical oasis feeling without the long travel time. Seafood restaurants, museums, the beach, shopping and beautiful hotels will keep you busy for your entire vacation, or you could just skip all of that and post up on the beach to catch a few Zzz’s underneath the warm Texas sun.

Houston Space Center

If you are only looking for a day trip in the neighborhood, then we highly suggest you spend a day at the iconic Houston Space Center. This gigantic center shows behind the scenes tours that give “unprecedented access to see the real world of NASA up close and personal” science shows, exhibitions and interactive presentations. All visitors get as close as possible to experiencing space travel and flight without ever leaving the ground!

One of the best attributes of living in Houston is the fact that you do not have to spend a month’s worth of pay to have a fun, relaxing experience. Our city offers a multitude of experiences and adventures without the extensive travel time!
