Our Favorite Cocktails in West Houston

Ah, the almighty cocktail: the class, the flavor, the style, and the fun time out that it marks. We love a good cocktail on a night out, and West Houston is the perfect spot to find a cocktail (or three) that hits the spot just right! So, we here at Alta City West thought, why not write about a few of our favorites? For this week’s blog, we’re counting up five of our favorite cocktails around this part of Houston! Of course, our neighborhood is chock-full of drink options, so whatever your style or flavor of cocktail preferred, there’s something for everyone. That means, if you think we’re missing a great one on our list, you’ll just have to let us know!
  • Pumpkin Pie from Brixology Crafted Cocktails. Craving a festive taste of the holiday season? Then everyone’s favorite pie mixed into the yummiest cocktail will have you wanting seconds, thirds, and maybe even fourths!
  • The Professional from 51Fifteen. Stoli Vodka and blue cheese olives? You had us at hello. Have it dry, strong, straight up, shaken, stirred… whatever you fancy! James Bond will be proud.
  • Tiny Bubbles from Caracol Mexican Coastal Kitchen. This sparkling wine cocktail has ginger liqueur with guava and pomegranate. Your taste buds will be having the ultimate party, and you’ll be joining that party in no time with just a few refreshing sips.
  • A Margarita from Vibe Sports Bar Lounge. A tried-and-true favorite, but the key here is to get it in bulk: $20 for a pitcher every Tuesday. Perfect to wash down those 50-cent hot wings!
  • Arnold Palmer Texas Tea from Marquis II. A Texas classic, a Southern favorite, just like Grandma used to make… However you slice it (or pour it, as it were), this favorite is the perfect reminder you’re not on Long Island anymore. You’ve never had tea this hard, twisted, and delicious!
What do you think? Are these the best cocktails in Houston? However you like your drink, you’re sure to find something to enjoy that’s right for you. Let us at Alta City West just remind you, though – it’s important to drink responsibly and have a driver! After all, coming home to us is the best part. Cheers! 🙂

An Astros Fan’s Guide to the World Series

At long last – it’s time for our Houston Astros to redeem themselves since the year 2005, where our team was swept in the World Series, losing in just four games… It was a tough loss, but that’s all about to change! The Houston Astros are in it to win it this year!

  • Know the games and times. Obviously, this is the most important one – you don’t want to miss a game. We’ve got full confidence in the Astros’ ability to bring it home, but we’re still expecting a close match-up with the LA Dodgers, with all seven games being played. How about you?
  • Looking for tickets? You may have to shell out for some expensive ones, but it’s not an impossible situation. Check online for a source that is verified… and if all else fails, we think that at home at Alta City West isn’t too bad of a place to cozy up and watch the game.
  • Traffic may be gnarly, especially around the stadium on game days… plan a route accordingly to avoid the Minute Maid Park craziness if you want to get home at a reasonable hour. Or maybe that’s an even better excuse to stay in?
  • Have fun celebrating. Let’s be honest, celebrations can get pretty rowdy, so be sure to prioritize a fun and respectable time for everyone. If you need a designated driver or Uber or Lyft, don’t be afraid to call one – and be inclusive and friendly as we all celebrate the wins together as a close, friendly community!
Well, there you have it – a few tips for surviving the Astros’ appearance in the World Series without white-knuckling it too hard. And, of course, if you’re celebrating in your own unique way, we want you to share it with us. We here at Alta City West love sharing the festivities on our blog and social media, so join in the community pride and Astros #teamspirit, and let us know how you’re showing your Houston Support. Go Houston Astros!

Photo Blog: Sporting Houstonians Colors

We’re full swing into that time of year: football season! In case you haven’t noticed, Houston is abuzz with Texans pride, the energy palpable in the air every Sunday as our football team takes the field and we cheer our boys on! We’re celebrating our team in this week’s photo blog with some highlights of Houstonians around the city showing their Houston Texans pride. Whether it’s at home in front of your big screen tv, or it’s at NRG Stadium rooting for the home team, you’re probably joining in the fun. Share your pics with us, and we’ll feature them on social or in a future blog. Go Texans!

Fall Activities In and Around Houston

Fall is in the air, pumpkin spice lattes are in hands everywhere, and the smell of apple cider and hot chocolate makes taste buds water (well, at least ours do)! This October, there’s so much to do around Houston to celebrate fall, so we didn’t want to let another week go by without highlighting some fun activities to do and ways to partake.

For this week’s blog, we’re giving you a few can’t-miss opportunities to show your fall pride. Let us know which of these are your favorite… or if we’ve missed any, of course!

  • Enjoy the pumpkin patch at Blessington Farms, where you can pick your own pumpkins in true harvest style, and also enjoy the Farm Funland with friends and family. There’s nothing quite like a fall tradition like a corn maze, not to mention some delicious fall flavors that you can buy fresh and local. Dewberry Farm nearby also has some fantastic (and delicious) homegrown options.
  • Hit the Haunted Trails for a spooky good time right here in Houston, where you can explore a haunted house, work your way through an eerie hayride, and explore the history and lore behind some of Houston’s spookiest secrets.
  • Make some autumn decor, and take some fall pictures for a photo shoot. Whether you’re dressing your place up for the season, or you’re getting yourself decked out in costume for Halloween, fall is the perfect time for some new photos – get your groove on and spice it up in (fall) style.
  • The Annual Fall Fest weekend takes place on October 22nd this year – don’t miss out on fun celebrations, attractions, and local favorites for all ages. It’s a Houston tradition, and one you won’t want to miss out on!

Whether this is your first time celebrating the harvest season in Texas, or you are used to autumn festivities year after year, you don’t want to miss out on the fun. Join in, and share with us how you’re celebrating the fall. We at Alta City West want to hear all about it… we may even feature you on our social media. Happy fall-ing!

Part 2: Photo Blog of Astros Memories

Last week’s blog was a great time to highlight a fun day at Minute Maid Park enjoying our Houston Astros play – but that was so part 1…. For Part 2 of our blog, we’re going to be counting down some of the memories made during America’s favorite pastime!     In this week’s photo blog, may we present to you a highlight reel of some of the best times at Minute Maid Park. Watching our Houston Astros play is one of our favorite activities here at Alta City West… so let’s all together celebrate the team spirit, the food, the camaraderie, and the crowds that make Minute Maid Park such a fun place to go. If you’ve got memories, share them with us, and we may feature them on our blog or social pages in the future. Go team go!

Part 1: The Sights at Minute Maid Park

We at Alta City West sure do love our baseball games. As we cheer on our Houston Astros, we get nostalgic for good old times growing up and going to the ballpark to watch our favorite team players hit home runs over the wall. The smell of the hot dogs, the sound of bats cracking, sights and energy of the large crowds, and of course the taste of the peanuts and cracker jacks… there’s nothing quite like it.   Thankfully, we’re not too far from Minute Maid Park, which means we here in Houston can enjoy an evening of fun at a baseball game whenever our beloved Astros are in town at home. Haven’t been to a game yet? We’ve got some tips for you in Part 1 of our blog.
  • Leave early to beat traffic. Heading into downtown isn’t too bad, but if it’s the wrong time of day, you’ll be in a jam much longer than you’d like.
  • Carpool or Uber to save on parking. We all know that prices get hiked around the stadium when a game or event is going on. Avoid the Minute Maid Park fees by thinking economically. Plus, if you’ve got a designated driver, that means at least an extra beer or two on the menu!
  • Explore the surrounding area. Heading into downtown Houston early? We are big fans of Jackson Street Barbecue (right across the street from the stadium) for dinner. Nothing like Texas BBQ!
  • Go on a Houston Astros fan appreciation night! What better way to celebrate our team, not to mention show your team spirit, than getting a free pennant or hat or bobblehead or another souvenir? More incentive to come back!
  • Stock up on snacks and drinks before the 7th inning stretch. This may seem like common sense, but avoid the heaviest crowds at this time by stocking up on the essentials an inning or two earlier. You’ll be glad you did!
  • Grab a late-night treat at Tout Suite, just steps away from the Park. Macarons, cupcakes, and other delicious baked goods await. Plus, they’ll give you that sweet sugar-fuel for your ride home after the game!
Ready for a night out? Don’t forget your camera – we’ll be posting Part 2, a photo blog of highlights. Submit some of your memories, and we will feature you. Stay tuned!

A Houstonian’s Day at the Beach

You know the drill by this point: another hot day leading into another smoldering weekend, and you just NEED to cool off STAT! Thankfully, we at Alta City West have you covered: we’re talking all things beach-related, since we’re just a short drive away from the Gulf and some of the best beaching the summer around Houston can offer!   Did you know that you don’t have to go all the way to Galveston for the beach? Houstonians, that’s too far for a day trip – spend some time around the Trinity Bay area, and you’ve got beach fun galore. Here are just a few of our favorite spots:   4. Sylvan Beach Park. Starting with the beach spot furthest north and working our way down, this one’s a real keeper. Not only will you love Sea Breeze Park for a picnic between swims, but the Sylvan Beach Pavilion is perfect later in the evening for a leisurely stroll or a romantic walk with that special someone.   3. El Jardin Beach. The views of Red Bluff and the open bay ahead make this spot a real winner. Bonus, Pine Gully Park nearby offers some quaint walks and beautiful gardens, so you’re getting a treat for all your senses.   2. Clear Lake Park. In the mood for a little less ocean, but still want the water? This spot, located right off the E NASA Parkway, offers the trifecta of a beautiful lake view, Armand Bayou wildlife, and the Bay Area Museum… so, fun AND educational day for everyone!   1. Kemah Boardwalk. As you drive further south on TX-146, enjoy the City of Seabrook and end your beach day with an evening at the boardwalk. This place boasts one of our favorite spots to view the bay (especially if you stay over and glimpse the morning sunrise over the water), not to mention some great restaurants in walking distance.   This summer, you can’t afford to not have a beach day or two. Pack up the car and the cooler, and take a mini-road trip with friends and family to one of these great beach spots. You’ll be glad you did… just don’t forget the sunscreen!

A Night Out in Southwest Houston

Craving a night out? Summer’s been long, the days have been hot, and work has probably been rough, too…. you deserve a night out on the town! Houston is a huge city, and there are so many things to do all around the different parts of town. Here at Alta City West, though, one of our favorite things to do is stay local to the west side of our city – you know, get out and explore!   We’ve got just a few suggestions for an ideal night out before summer ends. Here’s your ready-made agenda, no planning needed on your part. Go ahead, what are you waiting for?   Part 1: dinner time! In the mood for a western-themed dinner? Come on down to the ranch for some barbecue (and delicious sides, of course). BBQ has never been this fun and fancy – from the vibe of the place to the flavors of the menu, we can’t get enough of stepping into a cowboy’s world. We love the menu at Rio Ranch Restaurant, and you will, too! Part 2: catch a movie! In the mood for a flick? There are so many options at AMC Studio 30 – you won’t be disappointed! Perhaps a western to go with the cowboy theme from dinner? Be sure to check the showtimes ahead of time! Part 3: late-night dessert… Craving some “Fashionably Sweet Treats” afterwards? Then this place has it right in their name – and the good news is they’re open til 11:30pm! See you there for a sweet treat or two… or ten, let’s be honest. #WhatDiet? Part 3-and-a-half: or drinks instead! Why not take a short drive over to Jack’s For Cocktails, one of our favorite spots for eclectic drinks? Whether beer, wine, or mixed drinks are your flavor, you’ll find what you’re looking for to get your buzz on – just be sure to have a driver to get back home! It’s summer time – so get out there and start enjoying the evening. You deserve it!
