Labor Day Weekend in Houston

Labor Day weekend will quickly be upon us – and who doesn’t love a long weekend to relax and get away for a little while? Of course, by “getaway,” we mean a stay-cation right here in our wonderful city of Houston. After all, there’s plenty to do for the long weekend, and we at Alta City West are happy to share some of our favorite thoughts for the long weekend.

This week’s blog features just a few of our favorite upcoming things to celebrate at the end of this month. Take a look at the list, and see if we missed any.

    • A dinner cruise. If you’re staying local, there are a few different local parties taking place on the coast that are perfect for two (or more). Take a date, bring a few friends, or get the family together. A day out on the water is perfect relaxation for a long weekend!
    • Attend a party. Have you checked Eventbrite’s website? There are lots of events that will be happening around the Houston area that will guarantee a Labor Day weekend spent in style. Just be sure to plan ahead for a designated driver or the Lyft/Uber apps!
    • Houston Restaurant Weeks is going on around the city. This is the perfect time to eat at that restaurant you’ve been dying to try, and you’ll be able to do so at a fraction of the price. Just be sure to make a reservation, since it may get crowded.
    • A concert, a baseball game, a community event? There are lots going on, at Minute Maid Park, Houston Symphony, Discovery Green, and beyond. Check the website calendars for your favorite venue, and be sure to get tickets in advance.
    • BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival is happening over Labor Day weekend. If you haven’t been to Moody Gardens, now’s the perfect time to head over and enjoy your favorite local craft brew or two. Bottoms up!
    • Traders Village is hosting a Rock & Pop Tribute Festival over the long weekend… it’s the perfect time to enjoy some classic tunes from your favorite cover band (and enjoy some delicious food and drinks while you’re at it).

Did we miss an event or idea for the long weekend? Perhaps you’re leaving the city for a little getaway? Whatever you’re doing for Labor Day, enjoy the days off, plan to relax, have an adventure, and have fun with people you love. Share your Labor Day plans with us, and we may feature them on our social media pages, too – cheers!

A Houstonian’s Day at the Beach

You know the drill by this point: another hot day leading into another smoldering weekend, and you just NEED to cool off STAT! Thankfully, we at Alta City West have you covered: we’re talking all things beach-related, since we’re just a short drive away from the Gulf and some of the best beaching the summer around Houston can offer!   Did you know that you don’t have to go all the way to Galveston for the beach? Houstonians, that’s too far for a day trip – spend some time around the Trinity Bay area, and you’ve got beach fun galore. Here are just a few of our favorite spots:   4. Sylvan Beach Park. Starting with the beach spot furthest north and working our way down, this one’s a real keeper. Not only will you love Sea Breeze Park for a picnic between swims, but the Sylvan Beach Pavilion is perfect later in the evening for a leisurely stroll or a romantic walk with that special someone.   3. El Jardin Beach. The views of Red Bluff and the open bay ahead make this spot a real winner. Bonus, Pine Gully Park nearby offers some quaint walks and beautiful gardens, so you’re getting a treat for all your senses.   2. Clear Lake Park. In the mood for a little less ocean, but still want the water? This spot, located right off the E NASA Parkway, offers the trifecta of a beautiful lake view, Armand Bayou wildlife, and the Bay Area Museum… so, fun AND educational day for everyone!   1. Kemah Boardwalk. As you drive further south on TX-146, enjoy the City of Seabrook and end your beach day with an evening at the boardwalk. This place boasts one of our favorite spots to view the bay (especially if you stay over and glimpse the morning sunrise over the water), not to mention some great restaurants in walking distance.   This summer, you can’t afford to not have a beach day or two. Pack up the car and the cooler, and take a mini-road trip with friends and family to one of these great beach spots. You’ll be glad you did… just don’t forget the sunscreen!

There’s lots to do around us and all over Houston, so here are just a few of our ideas: Take her to brunch at The Egg & I What better way to tell Mom you love her than treating her to brunch at The Egg & I? With healthy options, as well as tried-and-true favorites from pancakes to eggs benedict, you surely won’t find a place around here better equipped for a Mother’s Day morning. And it’s a short walking distance away from us – need we say more? Oh, and don’t forget the mimosas – it is a celebration, after all! Surprise her with flowers from Classy Design We all know that nothing says, “I love you, Mom” better than a bouquet of flowers. This sweet spot just down a few blocks from us on Westheimer Road has many different arrangement options (some with little surprise gifts) that you can choose from. Just be sure to order online from Classy Design Florist’s website, or call ahead to be prepared! Enjoy a fancy dinner together at Joyce’s One of the best spots in Houston (since 1997) is Joyce’s Seafood & Steaks. Take a look at Joyce’s menu, and try to tell us your mouth isn’t watering already! Remember, this weekend is all about Mom, so be sure to put her first this Mother’s Day – she’s done so much for you, and we’re glad we can give you some tips to help say Thank You to her!

Celebrating Cinco De Mayo in Houston

Everybody loves May 5th! What better way to make an excuse to celebrate than indulging in a happy hour, a great meal, and some live music (mariachi, of course)? This Cinco De Mayo, we’re counting down the ways you can celebrate – with margaritas, tequila, and Mexican food galore! Here are just a few of our favorite Tex-Mex spots, all within walking distance of us here at Alta City West! Number 1: Chuy’s! Why we love it: the variety of the food and the friendly staff, hands down! Not to mention, it’s right across the street from us! Number 2: El Tiempo Cantina Why we love it: the vibe is fun – every time we walk in, it feels like a party! Number 3: Los Tios Mexican Restaurant Why we love it: what’s not to love about an authentic spot with deep, delicious flavors? Number 4: Fajita Flats Why we love it: the blend of food (not feeling Tex-Mex, and want burgers instead? You’ve got it!) – and we love the drinks, too. #Margaritas Number 5: Mila’s Taqueria Mexico Why we love it: sometimes it’s the smallest, most unexpected placed to get the most bang for your buck. Number 6: Taco Cabana Why we love it: “taco” is in the name – this place knows tacos! Need we say more? Wherever you decide to celebrate, be sure to have fun and take precautions in your partying!
