Labor Day Weekend in Houston

Labor Day weekend will quickly be upon us – and who doesn’t love a long weekend to relax and get away for a little while? Of course, by “getaway,” we mean a stay-cation right here in our wonderful city of Houston. After all, there’s plenty to do for the long weekend, and we at Alta City West are happy to share some of our favorite thoughts for the long weekend.

This week’s blog features just a few of our favorite upcoming things to celebrate at the end of this month. Take a look at the list, and see if we missed any.

    • A dinner cruise. If you’re staying local, there are a few different local parties taking place on the coast that are perfect for two (or more). Take a date, bring a few friends, or get the family together. A day out on the water is perfect relaxation for a long weekend!
    • Attend a party. Have you checked Eventbrite’s website? There are lots of events that will be happening around the Houston area that will guarantee a Labor Day weekend spent in style. Just be sure to plan ahead for a designated driver or the Lyft/Uber apps!
    • Houston Restaurant Weeks is going on around the city. This is the perfect time to eat at that restaurant you’ve been dying to try, and you’ll be able to do so at a fraction of the price. Just be sure to make a reservation, since it may get crowded.
    • A concert, a baseball game, a community event? There are lots going on, at Minute Maid Park, Houston Symphony, Discovery Green, and beyond. Check the website calendars for your favorite venue, and be sure to get tickets in advance.
    • BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival is happening over Labor Day weekend. If you haven’t been to Moody Gardens, now’s the perfect time to head over and enjoy your favorite local craft brew or two. Bottoms up!
    • Traders Village is hosting a Rock & Pop Tribute Festival over the long weekend… it’s the perfect time to enjoy some classic tunes from your favorite cover band (and enjoy some delicious food and drinks while you’re at it).

Did we miss an event or idea for the long weekend? Perhaps you’re leaving the city for a little getaway? Whatever you’re doing for Labor Day, enjoy the days off, plan to relax, have an adventure, and have fun with people you love. Share your Labor Day plans with us, and we may feature them on our social media pages, too – cheers!

Part 1: The Sights at Minute Maid Park

We at Alta City West sure do love our baseball games. As we cheer on our Houston Astros, we get nostalgic for good old times growing up and going to the ballpark to watch our favorite team players hit home runs over the wall. The smell of the hot dogs, the sound of bats cracking, sights and energy of the large crowds, and of course the taste of the peanuts and cracker jacks… there’s nothing quite like it.   Thankfully, we’re not too far from Minute Maid Park, which means we here in Houston can enjoy an evening of fun at a baseball game whenever our beloved Astros are in town at home. Haven’t been to a game yet? We’ve got some tips for you in Part 1 of our blog.
  • Leave early to beat traffic. Heading into downtown isn’t too bad, but if it’s the wrong time of day, you’ll be in a jam much longer than you’d like.
  • Carpool or Uber to save on parking. We all know that prices get hiked around the stadium when a game or event is going on. Avoid the Minute Maid Park fees by thinking economically. Plus, if you’ve got a designated driver, that means at least an extra beer or two on the menu!
  • Explore the surrounding area. Heading into downtown Houston early? We are big fans of Jackson Street Barbecue (right across the street from the stadium) for dinner. Nothing like Texas BBQ!
  • Go on a Houston Astros fan appreciation night! What better way to celebrate our team, not to mention show your team spirit, than getting a free pennant or hat or bobblehead or another souvenir? More incentive to come back!
  • Stock up on snacks and drinks before the 7th inning stretch. This may seem like common sense, but avoid the heaviest crowds at this time by stocking up on the essentials an inning or two earlier. You’ll be glad you did!
  • Grab a late-night treat at Tout Suite, just steps away from the Park. Macarons, cupcakes, and other delicious baked goods await. Plus, they’ll give you that sweet sugar-fuel for your ride home after the game!
Ready for a night out? Don’t forget your camera – we’ll be posting Part 2, a photo blog of highlights. Submit some of your memories, and we will feature you. Stay tuned!

For this week’s blog, we’ve got some photo highlights. Take a look at our countdown for some of the best Houston beach moments just a day trip drive away from us here in West Houston. A Houstonian’s Day at the Beach

You know the drill by this point: another hot day leading into another smoldering weekend, and you just NEED to cool off STAT! Thankfully, we at Alta City West have you covered: we’re talking all things beach-related, since we’re just a short drive away from the Gulf and some of the best beaching the summer around Houston can offer!   Did you know that you don’t have to go all the way to Galveston for the beach? Houstonians, that’s too far for a day trip – spend some time around the Trinity Bay area, and you’ve got beach fun galore. Here are just a few of our favorite spots:   4. Sylvan Beach Park. Starting with the beach spot furthest north and working our way down, this one’s a real keeper. Not only will you love Sea Breeze Park for a picnic between swims, but the Sylvan Beach Pavilion is perfect later in the evening for a leisurely stroll or a romantic walk with that special someone.   3. El Jardin Beach. The views of Red Bluff and the open bay ahead make this spot a real winner. Bonus, Pine Gully Park nearby offers some quaint walks and beautiful gardens, so you’re getting a treat for all your senses.   2. Clear Lake Park. In the mood for a little less ocean, but still want the water? This spot, located right off the E NASA Parkway, offers the trifecta of a beautiful lake view, Armand Bayou wildlife, and the Bay Area Museum… so, fun AND educational day for everyone!   1. Kemah Boardwalk. As you drive further south on TX-146, enjoy the City of Seabrook and end your beach day with an evening at the boardwalk. This place boasts one of our favorite spots to view the bay (especially if you stay over and glimpse the morning sunrise over the water), not to mention some great restaurants in walking distance.   This summer, you can’t afford to not have a beach day or two. Pack up the car and the cooler, and take a mini-road trip with friends and family to one of these great beach spots. You’ll be glad you did… just don’t forget the sunscreen!

Photo Blog: Brunch in Southwest Houston

We here in Houston sure do love our breakfasts and our lunches… but most of all, we love brunch! From pancakes to fried chicken and waffles, eggs benedict to mimosas (of the bottomless variety, of course), there’s just no end to the amount of goodies a good old-fashioned brunch menu can hold. Southwest Houston has so many options when it comes to brunch. Whether you want it homemade-style with love, or you just want the largest quantity possible with plates of food coming off the griddle like hotcakes, there’s something for everyone. For our photo blog this week, we’re looking at a few of our favorite brunches around Houston. Got any to share? Let us know! Not that we love the thought of sharing these plates, since we want them all to ourselves! 😉

A Night Out in Southwest Houston

Craving a night out? Summer’s been long, the days have been hot, and work has probably been rough, too…. you deserve a night out on the town! Houston is a huge city, and there are so many things to do all around the different parts of town. Here at Alta City West, though, one of our favorite things to do is stay local to the west side of our city – you know, get out and explore!   We’ve got just a few suggestions for an ideal night out before summer ends. Here’s your ready-made agenda, no planning needed on your part. Go ahead, what are you waiting for?   Part 1: dinner time! In the mood for a western-themed dinner? Come on down to the ranch for some barbecue (and delicious sides, of course). BBQ has never been this fun and fancy – from the vibe of the place to the flavors of the menu, we can’t get enough of stepping into a cowboy’s world. We love the menu at Rio Ranch Restaurant, and you will, too! Part 2: catch a movie! In the mood for a flick? There are so many options at AMC Studio 30 – you won’t be disappointed! Perhaps a western to go with the cowboy theme from dinner? Be sure to check the showtimes ahead of time! Part 3: late-night dessert… Craving some “Fashionably Sweet Treats” afterwards? Then this place has it right in their name – and the good news is they’re open til 11:30pm! See you there for a sweet treat or two… or ten, let’s be honest. #WhatDiet? Part 3-and-a-half: or drinks instead! Why not take a short drive over to Jack’s For Cocktails, one of our favorite spots for eclectic drinks? Whether beer, wine, or mixed drinks are your flavor, you’ll find what you’re looking for to get your buzz on – just be sure to have a driver to get back home! It’s summer time – so get out there and start enjoying the evening. You deserve it!

Photo Blog: July 4th in Houston

Independence Day in Texas is its own holiday, don’t you think? Whether you caught the parade, saw some fireworks, barbecued with friends, or lit some sparklers of your own, we at Alta City West hope you got to celebrate in style! In this week’s photo blog, we’re sharing some of our favorite #HoustonFireworks pictures we’ve found from all over the city. From the west side to uptown to downtown, there were no shortages of celebratory colors lighting up the Houston night sky – if you’ve got some, share them with us, too! And a very happy 4th of July to you – any excuse to celebrate and party, right?! 🙂

Photo Blog: Houston Spots for Water Fun

Boy oh boy, is it hot around here! West Houston doesn’t even have the worst of it in the state of Texas, but we at Alta City West sure do want to cool down. Yes, we’ve got a pool… but what about a drive to a lake or over to the ocean? Or even just a waterpark day? There are so many ways to cool off here in Houston, and we’re counting them down in our photo blog this week – some of our favorite spots aren’t too far from here. Don’t worry, relief from the sun is on its way! If you’ve found some ways to beat the heat, too, will you share them with us? We’d love to spotlight them on our social media. Peace out, and stay cool, everyone!

Photo Blog: Houston Golfing and Outdoor Adventures

Fore! That’s what we love to hear out and about as we enjoy the outdoors, especially now that summer’s begun. Of course, golfing is just one of many options for how to enjoy time outside in Houston this summer… but you’ve also got park days, picnics, hikes, and trips to the beach. Here in this week’s photo blog, we at Alta City West are pinpointing a few of our favorite outdoor activities (yes, golf is included) around Houston. Go on out there and soak up some sun!

Photo Blog: Sunsets Around Houston

There’s something about the sunset, don’t you think? Here on the west side of Houston at Alta City West, we can’t get enough of the breathtaking sky – there’s a reason every country singer from George Strait to Jason Aldean has sang about what it looks like to look up, don’t you think? When the sun hits the Texas skyline just right, you’re left with a beautiful sunset at the end of the day… and that’s what we’re showcasing in this week’s photo blog. We’ve taken some of our favorite images from Instagram that highlight that beautiful sky-light! Got a pic you’ve snapped? Be sure to share with us, too!
