The Best West Houston Golf Courses

While the summer sun is beating down may not seem like the best time to be outside. But when you’re on the lush, rolling greens of a golf course with a club in your hand, the beautiful weather is an added bonus. Whether you’re a scratch golfer or are just starting out, Houston has some of the finest public courses to work on your game. Here are our favorite courses in West Houston.

Memorial Park Golf Course

Boasting more than 60,000 patrons a year, Memorial Park Golf Course is one of the busier municipal courses in the area. And it’s for good reason. The course began its life back in 1912 as a 9 hole recreation for convalescent soldiers in a nearby hospital. Since then it has hosted such greats as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, and was the site of the Houston open for years. Memorial Park creates an elegant blend of history and modernity, with its 1930s course design still largely intact and it’s newer, charming clubhouse.

Wildcat Golf Club

Wildcat Golf Club offers a rolling links-style course with panoramic views of the city skyline, including a close-up view of NRG Stadium. The course was once an oil field, and you can expect to still see the odd small oil drill pumping away to this day. If you’ve already golfed Wildcat, fear not; they actually have two full 18 hole courses! So you have options.

Sharpstown Park Golf Course

For a great round of golf on a budget, you can’t beat Sharpstown Park Golf Course. They offer a round at likely the lowest prices in town for a course as well maintained as they are. At only $18 on weekdays and $26 on the weekend, you can spend the afternoon on the greens and still have cash to hit the 19th hole after. While the course may not be the prettiest in town, it will still offer a fun and challenging game at an unbeatable value.

Topgolf

If you’re not quite ready to hit a course, but still want to get in on the fun of golf, Topgolf is the place to be. This full entertainment zone is fun for golfers of all ages and skill levels. It takes the idea of a driving range to new heights. With high tech driving games, colored lights, music and adult drinks available, Topgolf feels more like a nightclub than the driving range your grandpa used to go to. It is a fun place to have a party and have the fun of golf without the pressure of living up to everyone’s expectations on the course. Because let’s face it: we’re all terrible at golf and hate every shot we make. But there is something about it that just keeps drawing us back in.

If you are looking to start your golfing life or you have been playing for years, Houston is a great place to hit the fairways and enjoy a day in the sun!

A Houstonian’s Day at the Beach

You know the drill by this point: another hot day leading into another smoldering weekend, and you just NEED to cool off STAT! Thankfully, we at Alta City West have you covered: we’re talking all things beach-related, since we’re just a short drive away from the Gulf and some of the best beaching the summer around Houston can offer!   Did you know that you don’t have to go all the way to Galveston for the beach? Houstonians, that’s too far for a day trip – spend some time around the Trinity Bay area, and you’ve got beach fun galore. Here are just a few of our favorite spots:   4. Sylvan Beach Park. Starting with the beach spot furthest north and working our way down, this one’s a real keeper. Not only will you love Sea Breeze Park for a picnic between swims, but the Sylvan Beach Pavilion is perfect later in the evening for a leisurely stroll or a romantic walk with that special someone.   3. El Jardin Beach. The views of Red Bluff and the open bay ahead make this spot a real winner. Bonus, Pine Gully Park nearby offers some quaint walks and beautiful gardens, so you’re getting a treat for all your senses.   2. Clear Lake Park. In the mood for a little less ocean, but still want the water? This spot, located right off the E NASA Parkway, offers the trifecta of a beautiful lake view, Armand Bayou wildlife, and the Bay Area Museum… so, fun AND educational day for everyone!   1. Kemah Boardwalk. As you drive further south on TX-146, enjoy the City of Seabrook and end your beach day with an evening at the boardwalk. This place boasts one of our favorite spots to view the bay (especially if you stay over and glimpse the morning sunrise over the water), not to mention some great restaurants in walking distance.   This summer, you can’t afford to not have a beach day or two. Pack up the car and the cooler, and take a mini-road trip with friends and family to one of these great beach spots. You’ll be glad you did… just don’t forget the sunscreen!

Photo Blog: Brunch in Southwest Houston

We here in Houston sure do love our breakfasts and our lunches… but most of all, we love brunch! From pancakes to fried chicken and waffles, eggs benedict to mimosas (of the bottomless variety, of course), there’s just no end to the amount of goodies a good old-fashioned brunch menu can hold. Southwest Houston has so many options when it comes to brunch. Whether you want it homemade-style with love, or you just want the largest quantity possible with plates of food coming off the griddle like hotcakes, there’s something for everyone. For our photo blog this week, we’re looking at a few of our favorite brunches around Houston. Got any to share? Let us know! Not that we love the thought of sharing these plates, since we want them all to ourselves! 😉

A Night Out in Southwest Houston

Craving a night out? Summer’s been long, the days have been hot, and work has probably been rough, too…. you deserve a night out on the town! Houston is a huge city, and there are so many things to do all around the different parts of town. Here at Alta City West, though, one of our favorite things to do is stay local to the west side of our city – you know, get out and explore!   We’ve got just a few suggestions for an ideal night out before summer ends. Here’s your ready-made agenda, no planning needed on your part. Go ahead, what are you waiting for?   Part 1: dinner time! In the mood for a western-themed dinner? Come on down to the ranch for some barbecue (and delicious sides, of course). BBQ has never been this fun and fancy – from the vibe of the place to the flavors of the menu, we can’t get enough of stepping into a cowboy’s world. We love the menu at Rio Ranch Restaurant, and you will, too! Part 2: catch a movie! In the mood for a flick? There are so many options at AMC Studio 30 – you won’t be disappointed! Perhaps a western to go with the cowboy theme from dinner? Be sure to check the showtimes ahead of time! Part 3: late-night dessert… Craving some “Fashionably Sweet Treats” afterwards? Then this place has it right in their name – and the good news is they’re open til 11:30pm! See you there for a sweet treat or two… or ten, let’s be honest. #WhatDiet? Part 3-and-a-half: or drinks instead! Why not take a short drive over to Jack’s For Cocktails, one of our favorite spots for eclectic drinks? Whether beer, wine, or mixed drinks are your flavor, you’ll find what you’re looking for to get your buzz on – just be sure to have a driver to get back home! It’s summer time – so get out there and start enjoying the evening. You deserve it!

Photo Blog: July 4th in Houston

Independence Day in Texas is its own holiday, don’t you think? Whether you caught the parade, saw some fireworks, barbecued with friends, or lit some sparklers of your own, we at Alta City West hope you got to celebrate in style! In this week’s photo blog, we’re sharing some of our favorite #HoustonFireworks pictures we’ve found from all over the city. From the west side to uptown to downtown, there were no shortages of celebratory colors lighting up the Houston night sky – if you’ve got some, share them with us, too! And a very happy 4th of July to you – any excuse to celebrate and party, right?! 🙂

Photo Blog: Houston Spots for Water Fun

Boy oh boy, is it hot around here! West Houston doesn’t even have the worst of it in the state of Texas, but we at Alta City West sure do want to cool down. Yes, we’ve got a pool… but what about a drive to a lake or over to the ocean? Or even just a waterpark day? There are so many ways to cool off here in Houston, and we’re counting them down in our photo blog this week – some of our favorite spots aren’t too far from here. Don’t worry, relief from the sun is on its way! If you’ve found some ways to beat the heat, too, will you share them with us? We’d love to spotlight them on our social media. There’s something about the sunset, don’t you think? Here on the west side of Houston at Alta City West, we can’t get enough of the breathtaking sky – there’s a reason every country singer from George Strait to Jason Aldean has sang about what it looks like to look up, don’t you think? When the sun hits the Texas skyline just right, you’re left with a beautiful sunset at the end of the day… and that’s what we’re showcasing in this week’s photo blog. We’ve taken some of our favorite images from Instagram that highlight that beautiful sky-light! Got a pic you’ve snapped? Be sure to share with us, too!

Staying Cool in Houston This Summer

“Beat the Heat!” You hear it every year, and you often only realize it when it’s too late: when you’re sunburned, sleepy, and sick of the sun. Before the temperature gets too hot, we at Alta City West want to help you plan ahead! Yes, it’s fun to enjoy the summer, but staying cool should be at the top of your priority list once those temperatures rise.   Below, we’re detailing a few of our favorite ways to stay cool and beat the heat in Houston this summer: there are water activities and indoor spots, family fun and nights out with friends… and all of them will keep you cool without so much as breaking a sweat. Well, ok, maybe just a little sweat…   Option 1: The Pool. Ok, maybe we’re cheating by saying this one – but you can’t beat the pool here at Alta City West. There’s a reason we love to call this place home, and the pool is the at the top of that list. Come on out to barbecue, enjoy the cabana areas, and throw your own pool party! 🙂 Option 2: The Water Park. Been to Typhoon Texas Waterpark yet? Located in Katy, TX (only a short way west of us here in Houston), this water park has got it all! Fun for the whole family with pools, slides, and a whole lot more. Go ahead, and make a day of it. Option 3: The Outdoors. Cooling off is also a lot of fun when you’re outdoors! Whether you like lake swimming or beach days, Houston has got options for you. We recommend a weekend drive out to Galveston, where the beachs are beautiful, and the bay is calling your name! However you choose to stay cool, just be sure to lather up with sunscreen, and stay hydrated. It’s hot out there – but enjoying the heat can be fun, especially afterwards, when cooling off is the refreshment you need!

Photo Blog: Favorite Craft Beers

When it comes to craft beers, there’s no place like Houston! In the mood for a hoppy IPA? Want a crisp Hefeweisen? Looking for a thick, creamy Stout? No matter your flavor, Houston’s got you covered. Here at Alta City West, we’re counting down just a few of our favorite craft beers that you can find around here – with this awesome photo blog! Got your own favorite craft brews? Be sure to share them with us, so we can see and share, too. Cheers!
